Empathy is a really useful psychological tool. It helps shape our daily lives and how we interact with others.

Research professor Brené Brown explains empathy through a comparison with sympathy - as these are two different approaches to being able to connect with others.

How does empathy play a part in your role as a personal trainer?

Being able to offer empathy means you can support your clients in:
  • Helping others overcome their gym anxieties.
  • Improving personal relations with others.
  • Finding motivation in others.
  • Being able to navigate vulnerability

Because being an empath means you learn how to remove judgment, clients and other people in your life will feel able to speak honestly about their struggles.

It will also help you in understanding your own and others’ daily stress levels, and how this can prevent you from pushing them and yourself to injury on days when you are mentally exhausted.

One of the benefits of a career as a personal trainer is that of being able to develop these life skills, which go far beyond a regular job description.

Do you feel you can build genuine connections with your clients?
